The Complete Guide to the 2024 Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

Welcome to my guide to the Dallas Open Tennis Tournament. As a native Texan from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I love any opportunity to visit my home and see some amazing tennis while I am there. Because of this, the Dallas Open Tennis Tournament is near and dear to my heart. As a huge tennis fan plus a proud Texan, I am excited to share my insider knowledge of an excellent tournament and an excellent city!

The  Dallas Open received some exciting news this year (2023) – it is going to be upgraded to an ATP 500 starting in 2025. Being upgraded to an ATP 500 will raise the importance within the professional tennis circuit, and will also increase the size of the tournament and its impact on the city of Dallas.

So this year, 2024, will be the last year to enjoy this tournament at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, TX in close proximity to Southern Methodist University (SMU). In 2025 the tournament will move to Frisco Texas. We will keep our readers posted as more is announced about the tournament.

The 2024 Dallas Open will be held at SMU

Who knows where the Dallas Open will be held in 2025, but in 2024, it will once again be held at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, TX  (close to SMU).

In this blog post I will share with you everything you need to know to have a great day at the SMU court: where to grab some food, where to shop, and some ideas of how to enjoy your stay in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

I will also share with you some courts that you can play at so that your trip to the Dallas Open will be the perfect blend of watching tennis, playing tennis, shopping in cool stores and boutiques and of course experiencing the amazing dining opportunities that DFW has to offer.

Whether you watch your favorite tennis stars on the warm up court getting ready for their match, enjoy the intimate indoor set up or take a break from the tournament to see all of the fun things that Dallas has to offer, your time spent at the Dallas Open will be a fun time for any tennis fan.

Dallas Weather

Dallas and Fort Worth are two cities that have grown together and now are referred to as the DFW Metroplex.

The temperatures in Dallas in February can be a bit chilly. You can expect temperatures between 42°F and 57°F, so warm clothes are a good idea. The good news is, the Dallas Open is an indoor tournament. There will be no rain delays. But you should plan to layer up a bit to be sure you are comfortable.

It’s a good idea to bring along your umbrella – Dallas can have up to 8 rainy days in February and you don’t want to get caught in the rain heading to the tournament. The Dallas Open is an indoor tournament, so rain or shine, the tournament will be happening!

The weather in Texas in February can be cold. It can snow in Dallas in February. Actually, when it “snows” in Texas, it is usually more of an ice storm, so hopefully there will be none of that during the tournament, but it is nice to be prepared.

Since The Dallas Open is an indoor tournament, every seat is great and over exposure to the sun is not a worry. I sat on both ends of the court, and enjoyed the side further away from the control booth because it was not quite as loud. The side that is close to the control booth is interesting because you can take a peek at the technology behind the match, but I found it to be a bit on the loud side.

Participating in watching an indoor match is really enjoyable because you don’t have to worry about which side is in the sun or being blown around in the wind. Every seat in the house is a good one, and because it is a smaller tournament (than a Grand Slam or Indian Wells) you can see the tournament at work and I find those parts fascinating.

A Brief History of the Dallas Open

The Dallas Open is one of the longest-running American tournaments on the ATP Tour. The legends of tennis have all played here including John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Michael Chang, John Isner, and Andy Murray, This legacy of top contenders continues today with the current generation of stars like Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, and Reilly Opelka.

Did you know the Dallas Open has not always been in Dallas. In fact, it used to be the New York Open. Before that, it was the Memphis Open.

In 2017, the New York Open partnered with Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment to move the Memphis Open men’s tennis tournament to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

Then, in 2022 the tournament returned to Dallas and became the Dallas Open. This was the first time since 1983 that the tournament was held in DFW.

For 2024, The Dallas Open is currently an ATP Tour 250 men’s tournament that will play its third year in Dallas on February 3-11, at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex at SMU.

In  2025, the Dallas Open will be upgraded to an ATP 500 level event and will be held in Frisco, Texas.

It will be the only ATP Tour indoor championship in the United States, and features men’s top world tennis players in singles and doubles competition.

The Dallas Open to Upgrade from ATP-250 to ATP-500

The Dallas Open, as it is now, is a smaller 250 level tournament. But in 2025 the Dallas Open ATP Tour event will be upgraded to a 500-level tournament.

The Dallas Open is one of three tournaments, selected from a pool of 17, to be awarded 500 level status. This is such exciting news for the people of Dallas and the tennis community in North Texas.

ATP 500 tournaments are the fourth-highest tier of annual men’s tennis competitions. There are the four Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Finals, and the ATP Masters 1000, and then the 500s.

The Dallas Open will be one of 16 global events at the 500-level. With the growth of this event, there is an increased awarding of more ATP ranking points and more prize money awarded. The Dallas Open will now draw a more competitive and diverse field, as an ATP 500 tournament.

I think that for any fan of tennis (like myself) the Dallas Open is a great opportunity to travel to a cool city, watch some great tennis and enjoy all of the wonderment Dallas has to offer.

This is from the Dallas Open’s Website:

“We are thrilled that the Dallas Open has been chosen as a new ATP 500 tournament,” said Peter Lebedevs, tournament director of the Dallas Open. “We want to thank our longtime friend and Dallas local John Isner, who was very supportive of our effort to take the Dallas Open to the 500-level.

We’re very excited for the thousands of enthusiastic tennis fans in the North Texas region. We’ve been building to this, and we will continue to improve all aspects of the tournament for everyone involved. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for additional announcements surrounding this exciting news.”-  Peter Lebedevs, tournament director of the Dallas Open

On the Dallas Open website, Lebedevs is quoted as saying, “As part of GF Sports & Entertainment’s commitment to growing the game of tennis and supporting the next generation of American players, we are excited to continue this relationship with SMU showcasing the talents of their top-tier players.”

I really like that even as a 500-level tournament the Dallas Open will continue their standing tradition of awarding the top male tennis player at SMU with a singles main draw wildcard.

I am a huge fan of college tennis and I love that the Dallas Open has this relationship with SMU and their college program. This year, I will be paying attention to the SMU player that will be awarded a wild card into the tournament. I will keep my ear to the gound and keep you posted as i find out more about that player.

The Dallas Open was selected as one of three tournaments to be elevated to the ATP 500-level. Other upgraded tournaments will be held in Doha, Qatar, and Munich, Germany.

Get Up Close With Tennis Stars

The Dallas Open is one of the small and intimate tournaments where you really feel like you are part of the match. You can watch the players up close. I was right beside the court where John Isner was warming up with his hitting partner.

It was also really cool to watch the Isner Family cheering him on when he was competing in the finals.

In 2023, it was so exciting to watch Wu Yibing become the first Chinese ATP Tour Titlist at the  Dallas Open. He had to beat John Isner in the finals and it was a real nail-biter.

These smaller tournaments are really fun to watch, because there are surprises to be seen. I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store!

Texans can be a friendly crowd and it was great fun to make connections with other tennis players from other places.

Getting Tickets to The Dallas Open

The first thing you need to do is get your tickets. With the announcement of the growth of the tournament, the tickets seem to be selling faster. Back in November when I was looking at their website there were seats available, but not as many as last year.

If you are interested in going to this tournament, I would get your tickets as soon as possible.

Getting Around Dallas

I also suggest you book your accommodations. There are loads of options in the Dallas Fort Worth Area, but it is a good idea to start planning your stay. I suggest you stay in a place that is centrally located. Dallas traffic during rush hour is truly epic – the closer you are the the event, the less trouble you may experience with traffic.

Also, if you are traveling to the Dallas/Fort Worth Area, I strongly recommend you rent a car. Traveling in the DFW Metroplex there are not great options for public transportation.  I almost exclusively use Hertz Rental, but there are tons of rentals to choose from.

PRO TIP: When you are getting a rental car, check your credit card and see if it has rental insurance included. Last year I had a small fender bender and it was really nice that it was covered with my Visa card.

If you don’t want to rent a car, you can always use a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. You won’t have any trouble finding an Uber in Dallas.

Parking at The Dallas Open

The first time that I attended the Dallas Open, I did not realize that there was designated parking.

The City of Highland Park has asked attendees to be courteous neighbors and refrain from parking in the neighborhoods adjacent to the Styslinger/ALTEC Tennis Center.

DAY SESSION PARKING

If you are planning on attending the day session matches, be aware that parking in the SMU garages is prohibited.

You are able to park for free at the Mockingbird Station DART lot.

Once there, a shuttle will be running nonstop on a loop to the venue that begins two hours prior to the first match of the day.

The DART station is also within walking distance to the Styslinger/ALTEC Tennis Center, which is a great option if you have walking shoes on.

NIGHT SESSION PARKING

If you are planning on attending the night matches, it is possible to park in the SMU garages after 5pm for a $25 fee.

Or you can park at the Mockingbird Station DART lot for free.

If you are wanting to park in a garage, please be aware that ALL ATTENDEES MUST FIRST GO TO MUSTANG GARAGE (Located at: 6001 Bush Ave.) AND WILL BE DIRECTED FROM THERE WHICH GARAGES HAVE AVAILABLE SPACES.

There are parking shuttles that will be available to take you from the various garages to the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Center where the event is being held.

The shuttles start two hours before the first match, and end 30 minutes after the last match. I would advise giving yourself plenty of time with the shuttle allowing yourself plenty of time to get from the garages to the tennis center.

VIP Parking Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

If you happen to be a box holder, or have VIP parking, there is a special lot for VIP Parking pass. It is at the Dyer Lot located at 5529 Dyer St, Dallas, TX 75206.

There will be four private VIP shuttles running nonstop. Complimentary beverages will be provided after parking. You must present your VIP Parking Pass in order to park in the lots.

ADA Parking

ADA parking will be available in the VIP Parking lot located behind the Tennis Center off of N. Central Expressway.

Check out the Women’s Tennis Classic

To kick off the Dallas Open, on Saturday, February 3, 2024, make sure to check out the Women’s Tennis Classic. This exciting exhibition match is scheduled to take place between Caroline Wozniacki and Genie Bouchard.

Wozniacki is a former World No. 1 and Australian Open Champion. Wozniacki has spent 71 weeks at No. 1 during her career and won 30 WTA titles, including the 2018 Australian Open.

Bouchard became a household name in 2014 when she became the first Canadian singles player, male or female, to be ranked in the top five in the world. She became the first Canadian singles player to compete in a Grand Slam final, doing so at Wimbledon.

The match between Wozniacki and Bouchard is on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 7 PM CT! Don’t miss out on this exciting women’s exhibition match!

Here is where you can tickets to this match

The tournament is also offering a special deal with the Women’s Tennis Classic Ticket Package. You can get a great deal on seats to the Women’s Tennis Classic by securing a Women’s Tennis Classic Ticket Package.

This package gives you tickets to see Genie Bouchard take on Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 7 PM CT PLUS your choice of any weekday night session ticket PLUS a free weekday day session ticket for the men’s ATP 250 Dallas Open.

Smaller Tournaments Are Nice

For 2024, The Dallas Open will still have that cozy, intimate feel. Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited about the growth of the tournament, but there is something very special about the smaller tournaments. The play is up close, you don’t have to balance which courts you want to watch and every seat in the place is great! I have really enjoyed attending the smaller tournaments. It is a great opportunity to watch some great tennis, talk with the vendors at the event and rub shoulders with other tennis fans. By attending tournaments in other cities, you have the opportunity to explore new areas.

What to Wear at The Dallas Open

When you are watching an indoor tennis tournament like the Dallas Open, weather is not the big deterrent that it would be if it were outdoors. That said, there are still things that are good to know when packing for your trip to the tournament.

First of all, this is Dallas. You will want to wear clothes that are comfortable yet fashionable. People do not dress as fancy as they might for Wimbledon, but I would plan for clothes that look nice and are comfortable. This is especially true when it comes to footwear. The venue is inside but there are a lot of risers and trip hazards, so do yourself a favor and wear good walking shoes. Also, it can be fairly chilly that time of year, so plan on wearing layers so that you can feel comfortable.

Also, remember, you can’t bring a heavy backpack into The Dallas Open. You can only bring into the venue what you can carry in a 12 x 12 x 6 see-through bag. But this makes it possible to wear layers, and pull them on and off as needed throughout the day.

Please see the section (and YouTube Video) on What’s in My Bag for the Dallas Open Tennis Tournament for some specific suggestions on what to bring and what to wear.

What’s In My Bag

Shopping at The Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

The first thing I do when I arrive at any tournament is to check out the vendors! The Dallas Open does not have a large group of vendors compared to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, but it is still fun to check out what is there and see what the different sponsors are showing off.

At The Dallas Open one of my favorite things was to look at all of the beautiful BMWs that DFWBMW.com had at the event.

We were able to sit in several of the cars and there were knowledgeable members from the BWM team to answer questions and show certain details from the cars. They also had a fun 360 spinning photography booth to make fun keepsakes from the event.

There are a few additional vendors and it is always fun to check out tennis themed apparel and equipment. As always, I like to check out the vendors at the beginning for ultimate selections and the end of the tournament in case there are items that they are eager to not take back from the event.

Traditionally, tennis has some very classy elegant offerings and this is especially true in a high class area like Dallas, Texas.

Don’t Forget Local Shopping in Dallas

Dallas is a Shopping Mecca! When you say the word “shopping” Dallas is certainly one of the top three here in the United States. I think New York, Los Angeles and Dallas.

The Dallas Open is located in the heart of Dallas – shopping central!

Here are a few ideas of some shopping destinations to hit while you are in DFW Metroplex

Visit NorthPark Center

Dallas’ top shopping destination is NorthPark Center. NorthPark is home to 200 retailers, including luxury boutiques, trend-setting brands, restaurants, and movie theaters.

NorthPark Center, sometimes referred to as simply NorthPark, is an enclosed shopping mall in the heart of Dallas, Texas.

It is located at the intersection of Loop 12 and US 75. NorthPark is a short 5 minute drive from SMU Campus.

Opened in 1965, NorthPark Center now has over 235 stores and restaurants and boasts annual sales of over one billion dollars.

This mall is full of almost every retailer that I can think of! Here are some of the stores that I like to check out when I am there:

Anthropologie, Tiffany’s, ALO Yoga, Athleta, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Gucci, Free People, Lacoste, Johnny Was, Louis Vuitton, Lilly Pulitizer, Lululemon, Prada, Nike, Ted Baker, Vuori and Tory Burch, just to name a few.

NorthPark also has beauty options to help you feel your best. The spa at Nordstrom is a full service spa offering everything from nails, waxing, facials and massage services. Click on the link below to schedule your service at Spa Nordstrom

If you have more questions about what services you could benefit from, the people at Renew Beauty Med Spa & Salon could tell you more about their services. Renew is a place to explore skin rejuvenation, injectables, laser hair removal and body slimming and fat reducing procedures. Here is the link to their website to take a look at some of what they have to offer.

It is easy for brows to get out of control, if your brows are taking a walk on the wildside, then pop into Brow Spa. You can get some attention to your brows and get them threaded or waxed for a perfect shape. If you are interested in henna tattoos, they offer that as well!

In the humid Texas weather, my hair can start getting a bit frizzy. If you are the same, then pop over to the DryBar. The dry bar is not a traditional salon. There are no hair cuts or color going on in this salon. Only a beautiful and smooth blow out.

Like I said, this is a special treat for me when I go to humid Texas.

NorthPark is also a place to experience a huge AMC movie theater. This AMC boasts 15 movie screens and has premium formats that bring superior acoustics, richer imagery, and a choice between Real D® 3D, Dolby Cinema®, and IMAX® technologies.

Taste their special menu of elevated cinema favorites and enjoy bolder flavors, wider variety, and superior quality movie snacks.

Reserve your seats when you purchase tickets online and relax into the spacious comforts of our AMC luxe recliners. It is the 20th-largest shopping mall in the US. If you are wanting to catch a show, click here to see what is showing and purchase your tickets online.

Visit the Original Neiman Marcus

Neiman Marcus is a historic and luxury retail store that was first opened in Dallas on the corner of Ervay and Main Streets in 1907. Neiman Marcus is described as “Texas with a French accent” giving a nod to the innovation and style that has been at the forefront of Neiman Marcus since its opening.

The first Neiman Marcus store was designed to fashionably clothe the entire community of Dallas, pledging fashion, quality, superior values, and unparalleled service which are still upheld today.

Neiman Marcus is known for their leading assortment of luxury merchandise for women, men, kids and home and has branched into 36 Neiman Marcus stores, two Bergdorf Goodman stores and five Last Call stores.

But a trip to the original Neiman Marcus store is a fun visit to make while on your trip to Dallas. Just a note, that there is a Neiman Marcus at the NorthPark Mall discussed above, but the original Neiman Marcus is found at 917 Main Street in Dallas. Every store is beautiful and worth a visit.

Depending on which Neiman Marcus you visit, will determine which restaurant is available. Whether it is The Zodiac Room, or The Mermaid Bar, the restaurant is known for the little cups of consume and their fabulous popovers with strawberry butter. I have had many a delightsome lunch at Neiman Marcus and recommend it highly to anyone looking for a beautiful place to meet friends and take a break from shopping.

Highland Park Village

Highland Park Village is a gem of a place to visit and is known for being very beautiful, very historic and very high end.

More than eight decades after opening, Highland Park Village has evolved into Dallas’ premier open-air shopping and dining destination. Offering a mix of the best known fashion brands in the world including Alexander McQueen, Brunello Cucinelli, Cartier, Celine, CHANEL, Christian Louboutin, Dior, Fendi, Goyard, Harry Winston, Hermès, Tom Ford, Valentino and more. The Village is also home to several contemporary favorites and local Dallas brands and designers. Visitors can enjoy incredible dining experiences at one of the 12 restaurants.

Highland Park is America’s first shopping center and became the prototype for shopping centers all over the country. This unique Mediterranean Spanish-style development was constructed in 1931.

Highland Park is part of the brainchild of John S. Armstrong. The story of the development of the Village began in 1906 when entrepreneur John S. Armstrong purchased 1,326 acres of land bisected by an Old Indian trace later used as a cattle trail, now called Preston Road. Mr. Armstrong envisioned a new, exclusive planned community just north of the bustling young city of Dallas.

Some may not realize that Highland Park is actually a separate town, located within the boundaries of the city of Dallas. Highland Park has become one of the most beautiful communities in the nation, rivaling even Beverly Hills. Because Highland Park started off with a good original master plan and held to strict deed restrictions, today it is an enclave of elegant homes, excellent schools and beautiful parks.

In 1935, the landmark Village Theatre was opened. It was the first luxury suburban theater in Texas. Built at a cost of $100,000 with seating for 1,350 persons, it has been a popular entertainment spot ever since. Until the theater was leased in 1987 to American Multi-Cinema (AMC), the second-largest movie theater chain in the United States, it was said to be the last independently run movie theater in the nation’s ten largest cities to show first-run films. Today the theater is enjoying a rebirth. It is operated by AMC and has four screens.

Highland Park Village also offers a number of complimentary services including personal shopping, valet parking, chauffeured car service and property-wide WiFi. A trip to visit Highland Park Village is a must for anyone visiting the Dallas area. Highland Park Village is a super quick 3 minute drive to SMU. When I say that The Dallas Open is in the heart of shopping mecca, I am not exaggerating at all.

Snider Plaza

Snider Plaza is known around town as one of the most peaceful, family-friendly spots in one of the most peaceful, family-friendly neighborhoods on earth.

Snider Plaza is a three-block shopping center and is also home to some of the area’s most eternally beloved dining spots, with Kuby’s, Bubba’s and Balls Hamburgers forming a sort of walking-distance triumvirate of comfort food.

The backbone of Snider Plaza’s local appeal are the dozens of charmingly petite boutiques that specialize in everything from stationary to antiques to imported fabrics.

There are several cool boutique stores at Snider Plaza, but I think that the bookstore called, Second Chapter Bookstore Pop Up, is especially interesting. It will be opening up again this year, opening its doors on Saturday, October 7 from 10am-4pm. Second Chapter will sell gently used, donated books, with proceeds benefiting the University Park Public Library. While you are in the area, make a point to notice the Eisenhower-era gas station — a compact, three-pump affair where attendants still race out to fill one’s tank. How cool is that? It is like a sort of time machine.

Inwood Village

If you are in town for the Dallas Open, it could be worth your time to check out Inwood Village.

The Inwood Theater is a Dallas legend. The theater has 3 Screens, DLP Digital Projection and Sound, Screening Lounges with a variety of unique seating options including couches, loveseats, chairs and ottomans.

Relax in the bar or take your drink into the auditorium. The Inwood Theatre showcases select Hollywood and independent films. Movie buffs praise its distinctive selection of foreign and independent films.

Locals love its eclectic Midnight Movie showings featuring cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This theater has an artsy, Old Hollywood feel with art deco architecture and beautifully painted murals. If you are wanting to branch out from the tennis tournament, consider checking out a foreign or independent film!

Whether you are looking for a morning coffee, afternoon shopping or late-night dinner and drinks, Inwood Village has tons of cool options. Proud of the fact that they are marked by individually owned stores, local restaurants and boutiques, Inwood Village brings you a personalized shopping experience you’ll find refreshingly different.

There are stores that you will notice, Like Trader Joes, Starbucks and The Gap, however there are also smaller, less known places that will be just as interesting to visit.

Inwood Village is only a 6 minute drive to SMU. If you were wanting to take a break from tennis and get a coffee or some shopping in, it’s all there for you.

Knox / Henderson

Knox / Henderson is becoming known as an urban “Furniture Row”

Knox is now home to big names like Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Z Gallerie and Restoration Hardware. Knox is located in the cultural heart of Dallas, Texas.

Known for its safe, walkable streets and for being one of the best neighborhoods for foodies, Knox-Henderson is one of the trendiest areas in Dallas for singles and young professionals.

If strolling along the Knox-Henderson corridor isn’t enough to get your heart beating, then you can get your body moving on the Katy Trail, an old railroad route that was transformed into a landscaped, 3.5-mile paved path.

The trail winds its way through the city’s urban core, from Airline Road (near SMU) to downtown’s American Airlines Center and West End. Whether you’re running, walking, biking or inline skating, the trail is a terrific place to enjoy the outdoors and get in some prime people watching.

The Knox-Henderson neighborhood offers a dizzying array of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. The Porch is where to go for epic burgers, Cafe Madrid is the best place for Spanish tapas, and Tei Tei Robata dishes up stellar sushi.

You’ll also find two of Dallas’ best restaurants,  Gemma and Abacus, located here. And the sidewalk tables are always buzzing at Cafe Toulouse, a bistro known for its Belgium-style mussels and French specialties.

If you thought Knox-Henderson was bustling during the day, you should see it after the sun goes down when the entire area comes alive with late night revelers. From posh dance clubs like the Candleroom to popular gastropubs like The Old Monk and Henry’s Majestic, (which also boasts a hidden speakeasy)—there’s plenty of action to keep night owls rollicking into the wee hours.

If it’s shopping you’re after, the Knox-Henderson neighborhood offers plenty of places to empty your wallet. On the Knox side, you’ll find home furnishing shops like Restoration Hardware and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, as well as designer boutiques like Kate Spade and Forty Five Ten. The Apple Store is also here. Over on the Henderson side there’s everything from Mexican imports at La Mariposa to retro fashions at Vintage Martini.

Food at The Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

I have to admit, the food at the venue itself is not my favorite. Mi Cocina is a tournament sponsor and they have great food, but I don’t like eating at the tournament.

The biggest reason is that I don’t like carrying around food and there are so many great places to try while in Dallas. In my opinion, with so many great places to try in the area it is worth it to leave the tournament to eat.

That said, anytime I am out for a whole day, I like to have a few emergency snacks to stave off being hungry. I like to pack small snacks, like nuts or a protein bar to get by and then eat outside of the venue.

It will be interesting to see what they have in the plans for 2025 when the tournament will move to Frisco. Maybe at that point the food at the tournament will be the way to go. But when all of these places are a quick 6 minute drive from the venue, it is just what I prefer.

Can You Buy Alcohol at the Dallas Open Tennis Tournament?

Yes, you can purchase alcohol at the Dallas Open Tournament. However you are not allowed to bring alcohol into the tournament.

I don’t drink, but even I have noticed there is a ton of high-end alcohol to be purchased, sampled, and enjoyed. Apparently high end drinks go over well at major tennis tournaments. Nothing says fitness like drinking right? Haha!

Can You Bring You Bring a Bag Into The Tournament?

The answer is – sort of. You are allowed to carry in a clear bag that is no larger than 12 x 12 x 6. In addition to that clear bag, you are allowed to carry a small clutch or cross body bag.

I got this great, yellow, see through LOVE tote from Courtgirl I have been using at tennis tournaments, but apparently, as of October, they are sold out.

They are doing another run of this bag, so if you are interested, get on over to https://courtgirl.com/products/love-tote-presale-ships-jan-23 and order one. They are scheduled to ship in January 2024, just in time for the Dallas Open!

Pro-Tip: Wear Good Shoes

After attending several tennis tournaments, I swear by the tip of wearing good walking shoes. Find shoes that you love, and that are comfortable and I think that they should look great too.

At any tournament you will be on your feet a lot, so do yourself a favor and wear the right shoe.  I learned this the hard way at the first couple of tennis tournaments that I attended. I wanted the super cute shoe, but I was miserable and uncomfortable in those “cute” shoes.

Now, I wear comfy and cute shoes. My most recent favorite walking shoes are the tennis shoes by On. I think that they are comfortable and look cool.

If you make it a full day, you might be surprised how many steps you take during the day. Especially if you hit any of the fabulous malls and shops that were just mentioned above.

Remember to wear your Apple Watch or Fitbit and see how many steps you get in – you’ll be shocked how many miles you walk. Dallas isn’t necessarily known as a walking city, but there is plenty to see and do while you are there.

You can certainly wear beautiful shoes, but my recommendation when you are traveling and attending sporting events, is that you should not wear “cute shoes” that are not comfortable.

Wedges and heels will not look out of place, but after a long day of seeing the sights and attending the tournament, your feet will feel tired. I know you want to look great at an event, and I do too, but there are ways to look good and still be comfortable.

The women in Dallas like to dress up, but for me, I like for my feet to be comfortable so that I can walk easily. Plus, because it can be a bit on the humid side, I find it easier to develop blisters if I am not careful.

There are a lot of great shoes out there, but I am already on my second pair On shoes. They come in a lot of colors and are crazy comfortable.

Places to Stay for The Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

When it comes to great places to stay, Dallas makes it easy. Whether you are a frequent traveler and like staying brand loyal, or if you want to try out some beautiful boutique type hotels there are great options for everyone.

Here are a few places that catch my eye.

The Dallas Open has two hotel partners.

They are both great places and very close to the tournament. Here is a little bit about them

The Highlands Hotel

When I travel, I often stay in a Hilton or a Marriott property. There are benefits to having status with a big hotel, but the main benefit I have used is a later check out time.

The Highland Dallas is a Curio Collection by Hilton™ hotel. This hotel is a three minute walk to the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex at SMU. So,as far as location, this is an amazing option.

Originally, The Highlands Hotel opened in the 1960s as the Hilton Inn Dallas, and has evolved into a mid-century inspired retreat and newly reimagined lifestyle hotel in the heart of Highland Park.

This hotel is in Dallas’ Highland Park neighborhood close to SMU campus and Moody Coliseum.

Shopping, movies, restaurants, and the DART at Mockingbird Station are right next door. If you want to keep up your exercise routine while away from home, there is a 24-hour fitness center that has Immersive Spin Bikes, a salon, spa, and heated outdoor infinity pool.

Like every Hilton property I have stayed at, the linens are crisp and clean and the staff very helpful.

In addition to being close to the venue, The Highlands Hotel is home to one of Dallas’ most acclaimed restaurants – Knife by John Tesar. Nothing says “Texas” like a juicy steak.

With comfort like The Highland Dallas gives, be assured that it is high-end without a trace of highbrow. They like to be upscale yet thoroughly unstuffy.

The Beeman Hotel (Pet Friendly Hotel Dallas Open)

The Beeman is also very close to the Styslinger / AltecTennis Center. It is about a 9 minute walk to the venue.

The Beeman offers pet-friendly environment and hotel rooms that blend clean, tailored lines with original, artistic flair.

One of the really cool things about staying at The Beeman are the partnerships that they have with local vendors. You can get a free chips and guac with purchase at Urban Taco, a local taqueria or 30 minutes of free bowling at Bowl & Barrel or enjoy a day pass at LifeTime Fitness and enjoy a class or play some pickleball.

There are so many great opportunities! Check out the partnership page to see a more extensive list of all of the partnerships that hotel guests have to enjoy.

The Beeman Hotel will ignite your curious side with stylish interiors, artistic details, pet-friendly suites, and its uniquely Dallas attitude.

The Beeman Hotel is located less than a mile away from the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Center, making it a walking distance from the Dallas Open Venue. A great option for any attendee of the Dallas Open.

If you get the chance to stay at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, do it! It will be the most amazing stay. The risk is, you might never want to go home.

Kasa Greenville Dallas

Warning! Sometimes when something is too good to be true, there is a reason for that.

Kasa Greenville Dallas is billed as the ultimate stay in Dallas, but reviews are mixed.

When they say that their “stylish Kasa apartments are perfect for leisure or business travel” this might be a stretch of the truth. Reviews have check ins as difficult, elevators not working and a common complaint is around the smell of trash and vape through out the building.

Maybe if you are on a very tight budget and willing to look past some of these complaints, it might work for you. It is in a good location, close to SMU, but I have decided that I will not be staying there in person on my next trip.

The Lumen

The Lumen is a mid-century retreat that is in an ideal location directly across from Southern Methodist University (SMU), along a tree-lined border of the Highland Park neighborhood.

Once this was a charming 1960s motel, now it is transformed to a boutique hotel with a poolside scene for guests only, a four-star restaurant The Front Room Tavern, free Wi-Fi, a work out facility, and enough indoor and outdoor event space to host a graduation party, game-day festivities, cocktail receptions, weddings and much more.

The Lumen is a beautiful property, and if you are looking for a place to stay that it close to the Dallas Open, it could be a good option.

Summary – My Guide to The Dallas Open Tennis Tournament

There are a lot of tennis tournaments you can go to, but the blend of an awesome city like Dallas and tennis make my tennis girl heart sing!

With the up and coming growth of the Dallas Open (from an ATP 250 to ATP 500) it is a tournament to keep an eye on.

Plus – any chance to get to home to Texas is great for me. I have attended the US Open, Roland Garros and several other tournaments, but there is a special place for The Dallas Open. This is the last year that it will be held on the campus of SMU, but stay tuned for more information to come on the new venue for 2025.

The great food coupled with the artsy, fun atmosphere of Dallas with the numerous and luxurious places to stay make The Dallas Open a destination to explore. Last year in 2023, history was made when the first Chinese ATP player won a Title! I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for all of us tennis fans!
