Making a Racquet in May 2025

A monthly update for the Tennis Yellow lifestyle.

Welcome to May

Another great month for tennis

There is so much going on in the tennis world, both for the professional players, the fans and the club players. I am certain that the details of each of these topics go way deeper, but here is the surface look.

French Open starts May 19th

Hey tennis fans, the French Open is kicking off this month, and it’s definitely something to get excited about!

The French Open is one of the four Grand Slams, making it one of the biggest tournaments of the year.  Playing on those tricky clay courts always makes things interesting and the pros really hit this tournament ready to move. You never know who’s going to surprise us with an epic comeback or a new star rising to the top. Plus, watching the top players battle it out in such a tough environment is always fun and intense. It’s the perfect time to sit back, grab a croissant, and enjoy some great tennis action. Follow along for some great looks to wear while watching and playing tennis!

Highlights of the week

I am a fan of a beautiful tennis dress!

Here are a few that I think are interesting to check out. Last week, a visiting team that was playing a match at my home club was wearing the dress from Lucky In Love. It looked so good on them and I complimented them on how great everyone looked. A friend I know on that team said that they said that it was a great one for their team because it looked great on everyone, from the teammate that was 5’4” and curvy to her doubles partner that was 6’ 2”! What a great find. Here are a few for you to peruse.

Join me on my search to find all of the beautiful and cool tennis finds for home and on the court. Weekly, I publish my highlights of the week.

Check Out This Book
Habits That Make a Champion by
Allistair McCaw

The book that I selected for this month is the 2023 book, Habits that Make a Champion by Allister McCaw. This book emphasizes that success in tennis, like any sport, is built on consistent, intentional habits. Many of the books that I enjoy I listen to on Audible. While it is true that I listened to this book while I was driving in my car, I recommend reading this book. There are so many great points that I want to go back to. McCaw writes a lot about if you are wanting to elevate your game, then focus on developing disciplined routines both on and off the court are important. In the book there are several examples of top athletes and examples of how they have seen such success and developed unwavering commitment, mental resilience, and relentless focus on continuous improvement.

As a tennis player myself, I enjoyed learning about the importance of cultivating a pre-match routine and how that will help prepare your mind and body, reduce nerves and boost confidence. When playing a match, it is important to maintain focus and stay in the present moment. Avoid dwelling on past mistakes or future outcomes. After your match, that is the time to reflect honestly on your performance. This can help identify areas for growth, but don’t dwell on setbacks. Develop habits of deliberate practice, targeting specific skills like serve consistency, footwork, or rally endurance. I think that a lot of the advice given in this book pertains to success both on and off of the tennis court.

I really like how McCaw stresses the importance of mental toughness. Building a good routine will reinforce positive self-talk, visualization, and stress management. Even under pressure, these mental habits help you stay cool and calm. Prioritizing physical habits such as proper nutrition, rest, and recovery ensures your body is prepared to perform at its best. This is great advice for every area of life.

Ultimately, McCaw asserts that champions are made through daily habits of discipline, focus, and resilience. By consistently applying these principles, tennis players can develop the mental and physical habits necessary to elevate their performance, handle the pressures of competition, and achieve their goals on the court. This was a really great read and very inspiring to find a guide book that really nurtures the inner champion.
