Keeping cool on and off of the court

When you are in the middle of the summer season of tennis or any outside court sport like paddle or pickleball, the heat coming off of hard courts can sometimes feel up to 15°F (8°C) hotter than the air temperature. It is wise to strategize your time on the court so that the heat is manageable. Here are few ideas of ways to manage the heat in August.

  1. Hydration is super important. You don’t want to think about hydration on the day of your match. The process of hydration should start days in advance. During your time in the heat, continue consuming water, but sip your water. Don’t gulp it. Also, your water can be cool, but it is better if it is not too cold.
  2. Sports drinks or hydration packets are good to consider but they will be more effective if the drinks are not too cold.
  3. Avoid caffeine, sugary drinks and alcohol. This can be a hard one for me… but if you are playing sports in heat, it is best to avoid these.
  4. Think about what you are wearing on the court. Consider wearing lightweight, light colored clothing. Light colored clothing that reflects the sun is preferable to dark clothing that soaks in the sun.
  5. Look for shade to recover in on set breaks. Sometimes there is a bit of shade on the court. Look for that area to recover and sip water during breaks. If there is no shade, an umbrella can offer shade.
  6. Wear sunscreen! I wear a tinted sunscreen on my face and I also use a sunscreen on my body to help protect against excess sun. Getting sunburned is a horrible feeling. I avoid sunburns like the plague!
  7. Wear a hat or a visor. I really enjoy wearing a visor when I play tennis, but it is a trade off because it can expose your scalp to excess sun. But then, if you wear closed top hats, they can feel somewhat stifling and hot. Here is a link to the hats and visors that I like to wear on the court. If it is a particularly hot day, give extra thought to what you wear on your head.
  8. Find methods of cooling. I have used cooling towels, misting fans and ice to help keep cool on the court. There are lots of great aids to keep cooler on the court. Use the link below to see what I use.
